The EA warns that budget cuts are impeding its ability to enforce

The Chair of the Environment Agency, Emma Howard Boyd, has issued a stark warning that the Agency has been forced to “stop or cut significant activities” due to budget cuts. The claim was made by Ms Howard Boyd in a letter to the Environment Secretary, George Eustace, on the 26th August 2020, which has come to light after it was disclosed as part of a Freedom of Information request.

Chair of the Office for Environmental Protection appointed

On 23rd December 2020, it was announced that the Environment Secretary, George Eustace, had appointed Dame Glenys Stacey as Chair of the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP). The appointment will see Dame Stacey head up the new Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB), lauded as an independent watchdog with the power to hold the government to account if it fails to meet specified environmental targets.

The Environment Agency’s ‘enclosed building’ proposal causes controversy

Between 14th September and 18th November 2020, the Environment Agency (EA) ran a consultation on appropriate measures for permitted facilities dealing with non-hazardous and inert waste. The new guidance seeks to implement best available techniques (BAT) and follows the development of the European waste management BREF, which covers a number of hazardous and non-hazardous treatment installations.

Does Brexit signal the beginning of a new legislative landscape?

On the 1st January 2021 the UK will leave the European Union. There has been much discussion over what this means for the future of environment legislation, particularly as the progress of the Environment Bill has been stalled due to COVID-19. There are concerns that in the short amount of time available before exit day, it will not be possible for the Bill to be passed into law before the new year.
