Waste sector excluded from the scope of red diesel exceptions

In March HM Revenue & Customs published a policy paper on the reform of red diesel and other rebated fuels entitlement. This paper set out the government’s intention to introduce legislative changes via the Finance Bill 2021 and subsequent secondary legislation to restrict the entitlement to use of red diesel and rebated biofuels from 2022 to specific industries and uses.

Definition of Waste Service resumes

The Environment Agency (EA) has resumed its Definition of Waste Service. The service was temporarily suspended last September due to permit application backlogs which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

EA changes the way it scores environmental breaches in CAR forms

The Environment Agency (EA) has contacted stakeholders in the waste sector to advise them of changes it has made in relation to the scoring of environmental breaches in compliance assessment reports (CAR’s). The changes relate to management system conditions in relation to pollution, Management System condition A (MSA) and Management System condition B (MSB).

OEP launched on interim basis

On 1st July 2021 the Office of Environmental Protection was launched on an interim basis. The move comes as the Environment Bill, which establishes the OEP, progresses through Parliament. The OEP has been lauded as a powerful new independent regulator that will hold government to account and ensure that environmental legislation and protections are adhered to.
